Canyoning<\/strong><\/h3>

Away from the \u201cclassic\u201d canyoning hotspots of the Pyrenees, Chistau hides a handful of alpine canyons that feel like true hidden gems for anyone passionate about the sport.<\/p>

The Barranco del Sen<\/strong> (pictured) is one of them: a short approach leading to around three hours of rappels and wild scenery.<\/p>

The Gallin\u00e9s Canyon<\/strong>near Saravillo, is reserved for those who love exposure and vertical terrain, ending with a spectacular 100-metre rappel split into three sections, crossing above the tunnels of La Enclusa.<\/p>

For experienced white-water canyoners, the Sallena Canyon<\/strong> is one of the most iconic canyons in the Pyrenees and requires a high level of technical skills and experience.<\/p>

Further south, within the municipality of Tella-Sin, lies the beautiful \u2014 and better known \u2014 Miraval Gorge, divided into two fun sections: The Upper and Lower Miraval canyons.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Both are aquatic canyons filled with jumps into turquoise pools, although the upper section is more physical and technical, while the lower canyon offers a perfect family-friendly adventure.<\/p>

Rock climbing<\/strong><\/h3>

Sport Climbing:<\/strong><\/h5>

The crag of Revilla<\/strong>, near Tella, offers routes ranging from grade IV up to 8th grade. It\u2019s a great winter crag, with sunshine until around 4pm.<\/p>

In the Devotas Gorge you\u2019ll find the sectors of Devotas and Superdevotas<\/strong>home to routes starting at 6th grade and featuring plenty of 7th and 8th grade climbing respectively. The climbing here is characterised by tufas and it`s only suitable in summer, as the walls remain wet during winter.<\/p>

Rinc\u00f3n de Sin<\/strong>just before the Devotas Gorge, is another excellent summer climbing crag. Expect high-quality limestone and routes beginning around 6b, with many climbs in the 7th grade range.<\/p>

Multi-Pitch and Trad Climbing<\/strong><\/h5>

Pe\u00f1a Arti\u00e9s: <\/b>Beside the tunnels leading into Chistau rises a huge wall over 400 metres high: Pe\u00f1a Arti\u00e9s \u2014 often incorrectly referred to by climbers as \u201cPe\u00f1a de Sin\u201d. These are serious routes where protection gear is essential. Climbing here demands strong technique, careful route-reading and a genuine taste for adventure.<\/p>

Pared de los Carboncillos (Santa Isabel Pass)<\/b>
Recently developed semi-equipped routes on limestone scattered with curious fossilised sea sponges known locally as \u201ccarboncillos\u201d.<\/p>

Grades start around 6b.\nEast-facing, the wall is ideal for cold spring mornings or hot summer afternoons.<\/p>

The Cotiella Massif<\/strong> and Lafortunada Wall<\/strong> also offer several interesting options for traditional and alpine-style climbing.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mountain Bike<\/strong><\/h3>

With its wild alpine character, Chistau is a privileged destination for\u00a0alpine mountain biking,<\/strong>especially for riders with solid experience in this kind of terrain.<\/p>

Most routes involve significant elevation gain, and the trails\u00a0are generally unmarked<\/strong>, so careful planning is essential. Finding GPS tracks, studying maps and preparing properly all form part of the adventure here.<\/p>

Beyond the classic ride to the\u00a0Basa de la Mora<\/a>, the valley\u2019s main rideable alpine terrain \u2014 often involving long hike-a-bike sections \u2014 is concentrated around the\u00a0Cruz de Guardia, Punta Suelza<\/a>-La Madera Pass.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>

For\u00a0gravel or XC riding,<\/strong>\u00a0, all of the valley\u2019s forest tracks are suitable for mountain bikes. However, it\u2019s worth bearing in mind that the access dirt roads\u00a0to the Sah\u00fan\/Ch\u00eda pass, the Viad\u00f3s Refuge and especially Basa de la Mora become quite busy with motor vehicles during summer,<\/strong>\u00a0which can make riding less enjoyable and, at times, potentially dangerous.<\/p>

If you\u2019re looking for something quieter, the dirt roads above\u00a0San Chuan or the route linking Chist\u00e9n with the La Comuna Valley<\/strong>\u00a0are both excellent alternatives \u2014 equally beautiful and perhaps a little less demanding in terms of elevation gain.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Snowshoeing<\/strong><\/h3>

When winter covers the valley in snow, snowshoeing becomes one of the most magical ways to discover Chistau. You don\u2019t need to be an expert \u2014 just a willingness to walk, warm clothing and the desire to let the winter mountains work their magic.<\/p>

Routes for all levels<\/b>: In Chistau you\u2019ll find everything from gentle introductory walks to half-day routes that are perfect for families.<\/p>

Tabern\u00e9s\u2013Viad\u00f3s\nOne of the valley\u2019s classic starting points for snowshoe routes.<\/p>

The Cinqueta riverside and La Poma area\nIdeal for easier and more accessible outings.<\/p>

Routes towards places such as Cruz de Guardia or Fubillons offer wider views and a little more elevation for those looking for a bigger adventure.<\/p>

Mountaineering and Ice Climbing<\/strong><\/h3>

Less famous for mountaineering than the neighbouring Bielsa Valley, Chistau still hides a remarkable collection of routes for those drawn to ice, snow and wild alpine terrain.<\/p>

Below the north faces of Pe\u00f1a de las Diez and Pe\u00f1a de las Once<\/strong> , several beautiful icefalls<\/strong> form for just a few days each winter, offering short-lived but unforgettable climbing. Depending on snow conditions along the Ch\u00eda dirt road and the line you choose, approaches can range from 45 minutes to more than two hours.<\/p>

Even more remote is the Mobis\u00f3n icefall<\/strong>, tucked away beneath its north face. Its altitude \u2014 above 2,600 metres \u2014 and long approach usually guarantee quiet conditions and excellent ice quality.<\/p>

Also within the Cotiella Massif lies the Fuenfr\u00eda area<\/strong>, a true playground for experienced alpinists. Here you\u2019ll find La Graciela<\/strong> , considered the hardest ice and mixed route in Spain, waiting for those bold enough to take it on.<\/p>

More accessible are the Raymond d\u2019Espouy and Central couloirs on Pe\u00f1a de la Una<\/strong>, both located near Basa de la Mora. The setting alone makes them unforgettable.<\/p>

At Posets\/Lardana massif<\/strong>, possibilities multiply, especially later in spring. The Jean Arlaud Couloir on Posets<\/strong> is one of the area\u2019s classic mountaineering routes \u2014 the kind of climb every alpinist wants to add to the list.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Ski Touring<\/strong><\/h3>

The slopes of Punta Suelza<\/strong>, home to areas such as Fubillons and La Poma<\/strong>, offer some of the best accessible ski touring in the valley, with relatively easy access via forest track. It\u2019s best to leave the car at the Cruz del Puyadase viewpoint, as the road beyond is often icy.<\/p>

For something more demanding, head towards the mysterious Cotiella Massif<\/strong>Cotiella Massif. The circular route linking the magical Agujas de Lavasar with the Ib\u00f3n de Plan \u2014 also known as Basa de la Mora \u2014 offers some of the valley\u2019s finest ski touring scenery and descents.<\/p>

If you\u2019re looking for a multi-day ski touring adventure Posets-Maladeta Natural Park<\/strong> , the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park is hard to beat.<\/p>

Reserved for experienced skiers capable of carefully planning their routes, its mountain huts and unguarded refuges provide shelter at the end of each day.\u00a0<\/p>
