Chistén — Gistaín in chistabín, the valley’s native language — is one of the highest villages in the Pyrenees, sitting at 1,420 metres above sea level.

Always bathed in sunlight, Chistén is a beautiful natural balcony overlooking the Cotiella massif. To reach it, you’ll follow the valley’s main road as it winds through a final series of bends, with the village hidden just beyond them.

Its distinctive skyline is shaped by the village’s three towers: the church tower, the tower of Casa Tardán and the tower of Casa Rin. These 16th-century defensive towers still stand as symbols of the power and importance these houses once held.

The three viewpoints

These panoramic viewpoints are located just outside the village and can be reached with an easy and pleasant walk

The Cruz del Puyadase viewpoint is a place with a special atmosphere, overlooking the upper part of the Cinqueta River.

The Grau viewpoint sits above the village and offers beautiful views over Gistaín and Plan.

The Fontanetas viewpoint, located along the road into the village and the closest of the three, offers an impressive view over San Juan de Plan.

A walk through its streets feels like stepping back in time.

Thanks to its secluded location — at the very end of the valley road — Chistén has preserved the true spirit of Chistau better than perhaps any other village in the valley.

It’s well worth spending a morning or an afternoon wandering slowly through its steep and deeply authentic streets.

The Viadós Mountain Hut.

If there’s one place the people of Chistau proudly carry in their hearts, it’s the area around the Viadós Refuge, located 14 kilometres along a forest track that is only accessible in summer and best reached with a 4x4 vehicle.

Facing directly towards the dramatic north face of the Lardana massif — also known as Posets — this landscape is one of the most breathtaking in the Pyrenees, combining the sheer presence of its second-highest peak with the timeless beauty of the traditional Viadós shepherd huts.

The Zinqueta Riverside Trail

This riverside trail can be walked in sections or completed in full, starting from any of the bridges along the route, although most people begin at Puen Pecadó.

The section between Puen Pecadó and Puen del Molín features several information panels about the local wildlife and plant life.
