The Night of the Trucos, celebrated during San Antón, is one of the most unique traditions in the Chistau Valley.
As dusk falls on the 17th of January, a great bonfire is lit in Saravillo and, gathered around it , young and old begin to ring the “trucos” — huge livestock bells whose deep sound echoes through the night.
The noise rolls between the stone houses and surrounding mountains, driving away evil spirits and, according to tradition, protecting livestock throughout the year.
After the “trucada” in Saravillo, the celebration continues from village to village across Chistau, stretching this magical and ancestral night well into the early hours.
In Chistau, the villages of Plan, San Chuan and Chistén each keep their own carnival dates and traditions alive, creating a festive season that stretches across February and March.
In the heart of winter, the streets of these mountain villages fill with colourful costumes, music and celebrations that vary from one place to another.
Yet all of them share the same spirit: gathering together for “la ronda”, laughing in the face of winter and keeping ancient customs alive — such as the “muyén”, the straw figure carried through the streets by the young people of San Chuan and Plan as the ronda visits every house in the village.
In winter, the Chistau Valley turns white and everything takes on a different dimension.
Snow blankets the peaks and meadows, ice decorates waterfalls and roadsides, and the silence of the forests becomes even deeper.
It's the season for snowshoe walks, ski touring adventures, peaceful walks between villages with smoking chimneys and evenings spent by the fire after a day out in the cold mountain air.
Less than an hour from the valley, you’ll also find the Pineta cross-country ski area in Bielsa and the alpine ski resort of Piau-Engaly , just across the French border.
Winter in Chistau is also — perhaps above all — a season of calm.
The valley becomes a quiet, almost timeless place. Paths fall silent , life in the villages slows down, and the soft winter sun sets the rhythm of shorter days.
Walking through stone streets, crossing frozen meadows or simply sitting on a stone bench gazing at snow-covered mountains brings a sense of peace that’s hard to find elsewhere.
It’s a season that invites you to listen to the silence, enjoy the valley’s cosy accommodation and restaurants, and let yourself sink into the stillness of the landscape.
